Incels
In anticipation of the May, 2024 10th anniversary of the Incel-led shooting and stabbing attack in Isla Vista, California, community-based and school emergency management teams need to act now.
On May 23, 2014, a ‘mysogynist killer became an incel hero’ (BBC, 2018), when he killed six people and injuring 14 others in a shooting and stabbing attack in California. Incel is a term for people (usually males) who are self-described involuntary celibates, who blame and then target females with violence (and any others who get in their way), based on their own sexual failings.1 In keeping with established protocols, his name will not be amplified here, and he will be described specifically by his initials, ‘E.R.’, only. Incels pose a different threat than other domestic violent extremists, but there can be connections, as well.

The CEMIR will be migrating these analysis reports to this Substack in the next few months.
