Phishing is called phishing because it is a direct analogy to fishing, where attackers use fraudulent "bait"—like fake emails or websites—to catch, or lure, unsuspecting users into revealing sensitive data, such as passwords or credit card numbers. The "ph" spelling was heavily influenced by 1970s "phreaking" (phone hacking) culture.
