Day 3 of our advocating for the "August is National Emergency Management Awareness Month" campaign covers how Emergency Managers network, and why.

As part of the “August is National Emergency Management Awareness Month” campaign, originated by the IAEM-USA, to raise awareness of the field of professional Emergency Management (as well as better describe what Emergency Managers do, don’t do, etc.), we bring you our take on 31 Days of Emergency Management Awareness.” Today’s posts - for Day 3 - is on networking.
These posts are designed for the general public, folks beginning their education and/or careers in Emergency Management, local politicians, community leaders, etc. We figure there are a ton of questions about what Emergency Management is all about, and since we have a open mic and platform to help explain all of it, here goes.
Who we network with
Check out this short video which connects local Emergency Services to Local Emergency Management, from the IAEM-USA:
Emergency Managers network with first responders, emergency responders (those who respond after the first responders, such as transportation departments, public works departments, private contractors like tow vehicles, non-governmental groups like the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, etc.), and first receivers such as hospitals and reception center/shelter operators. It is absolutely a must that Emergency Managers establish these relationships and partnerships during ‘steady-state’; when the skies are clear blue outside.
One good group to network through is the International Association of Emergency Managers - at www.iaem.org. Michael Prasad, MA, CEM® is a volunteer elected national board member (2024-).
